Find the Right Jewelry for you!

The #1 Reason for Returns is because the customer ordered the wrong size. By using the information below - you should be able to find that perfect size for you!

Below is a Quick Primer on Buying the Proper Size. If you are in doubt contact us via email, phone or live chat.

Pendant, Medal, Locket and Charm Sizing:
Many people aren't familiar with millimeters and how small or large a pendant, locket, charm or medal really is.

Here is a Quick Reference points: A Dime is about 18mm, a Penny - 19mm, Nickel - 21mm, Quarter - 24mm and a 1/2 Dollar is approximately 30mm.

Anything under 18mm is considered on the small side and jewelry under 15mm is considered tiny by most people. The "average" size for a Pendant, Medal, Locket or Charm is between 18mm and 25mm. Men tend to get larger sized jewelry than women do. Keep in mind the shape of the item as well, some crosses aren't that wide but they are long and therefore the overall size may be appropriate.

Chain/Necklace Lengths:
Generally when a Chain has a pendant, medal, charm or locket attached - the chain is sturdy enough to carry the weight but shouldn't be so thick that it overwhelms the attached jewelry.  Typically for men, the chain isn't as thick as it would be if the chain wasn't being used to hold a pendant, medal, charm or locket.

Most of the chain and necklace purchases are made in the 2mm to 6mm width range. With men tending to buy thicker chains and women staying closer to the 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm area. Keep in mind that some styles are prone to have more width -  like a Figaro Chain for example where a Rope Chain generally isn't as thick/wide.

A typical chain purchase by a man wearing a Pendant would be a 20 to 24 inch, 3 to 6 mm Rope Chain and a typical purchase by a woman would be an 18 inch, 1.5mm to 2.5mm Rope Chain.  Chains or Necklaces that are 16 inches in length should only be used for children or people who are petite. The Chain or Necklace length most often returned: 16 inches (too short in most people's eyes). Remember, a little longer is better than too short. If the chain or necklace will be for a large man or woman over 200 lbs - the chain should be closer to 24 inches than to 18 inches. Chains or Necklaces 26 or more inches typically are long enough to fit over a person's head.

We do offer many of our chain styles in custom lengths - above and below the typical 18inch to 24inch lengths. Email us for solutions if you need a chain in a particular length. We also have dozens of different styles of chains and necklaces that we don't have on the site, so contact us if you are looking for a particular style.

To determine the length of a Chain or Necklace that you own - use a piece of string to measure the current chain and use a ruler with the string to get the final measurement that you want. When in doubt - go 1 or 2 inches longer.

The Most Popular Men's Bracelet Length is 8 inches and the most Popular Women's Bracelet Length is 7 inches.

Area of Concern: The biggest major area of concern when wearing a pendant, locket, charm or medal is if the chain can fit through the bail. The bail is the piece (usually circular) typically on the top of the pendant where the chain or necklace slides through. Many Bails in the marketplace are 2 to 2.5mm in diameter. When you order a chain or necklace through PendantsDirect.com along with your Pendant, Charm, Medal or Locket - we will generally attached the two items and if there is a problem - we will let you know before shipping out the order. If you are just buying the Pendant, Charm, Medal or Locket from us and already have the chain and it's a large/thick chain or necklace... email us to confirm the bail size and if your chain will fit through the bail. We generally reply to emails within 60 minutes during normal business hours.

Chain Styles for Pendants, Lockets, Medals and Charms:
The Rope Chain is the most popular for holding Pendants, Charms, Lockets or Medals (for women and men) followed by Omega Chains, Cable Chains, Snake Chains, Wheat Chains and Small Box Link Chains.

Yellow Gold + Platinum seems to be the most popular with Men, although White Gold is picking up steam. White Gold and Silver seem to be the favorite metals for women. Generally, the metal type in the chain matches the main metal that was used to create the pendant, medal charm or locket - ie. a 14k Yellow Gold Chain, tends to hold a 14K Yellow Gold pendant.
